Front Porch Makeover

This week, we finally gave our front porch the makeover it desperately needed. For five years, we hadn’t touched it, there were still visible claw marks from our dogs and the floorboards had seen better days. So we decided to try something completely different: a painted checkerboard pattern using just a can of paint, a can of wood stain, a 12 x 12 tile as a stencil, and one roll of tape. We went with a high-contrast look that gives it a Harley Quinn-style pattern, and while it took two full days to complete, the transformation was absolutely worth it. The biggest challenge was the taping and measuring. It had to be precise to keep the pattern clean and balanced, but once it was mapped out, the painting process was surprisingly simple.

After the paint cured, I brought in a few key updates to finish off the space. We swapped out the old light fixture, added fresh plants to the planters, and picked up new chairs and pillows that made the whole area feel more welcoming. What’s exciting is that none of these changes were major investments, but together, they completely redefined the entrance to our home. If you’ve been thinking about updating your porch but haven’t wanted to commit to a full renovation, something like this might be the perfect project. Affordable, approachable, and still full of impact.

I like how the check pattern of contrasting colors elongates the space. You keep moving from one project to the next. Completing them all. I think a weekend away is in order for both of you! ☺️
