One of my favorite ways to transform something in the garden is with paint. Painting something can give it whole new life. Many of my family and friends say “how are you going to be able to tell the original shape with all those layers of paint?” I will gladly paint something and then two weeks later paint it again because the color just wasn’t right. I will even paint something a year later just because I got bored of the color.
The way things can just feel fresh and bring me joy again with a little coat of paint is so worth the amount of time it takes so set up, paint and then clean up.
Now with how much I paint I’m basically a self-proclaimed expert on painting and picking the right colors. Well at this point in my life at least, a few years ago I was very indecisive and would but 6-7 of the little test paints. With that I have been about to find the best of the best! My favorite paint colors for inside, outside to paint a bench and what sheen to use.
Quickly, let’s talk prep. When I first started painting I would use all the little things to help. Every single thing that came out I would buy and test, so let me suggest what you should buy. I’m telling you I have tried EVERYTHING! My list of supplies is simple and doesn't cost a fortune. These are my tried and true, never let me down, go-to supplies!
I usually pick up my supplies from Home Depot while grabbing my paint!

Why Should You Paint It?
Paint colors can work wonders in transforming an item from old to new, whether it's in the house or in the garden. By carefully selecting the right colors, you can breathe new life into old furniture, décor, or outdoor structures. Bright and vibrant colors can make a piece stand out and become a focal point of a room or garden. On the other hand, neutral tones can give a more modern and sophisticated look. Additionally, using contrasting colors or patterns can add visual interest and create a unique and personalized touch to any item. The power of paint colors lies in their ability to refresh and revitalize the look of an object, making it feel fresh and updated.
Falling Snow
Falling Snow by Behr in the Marquee line Eggshell finish is my go-to white!
It’s not yellow, blue or green. It’s just a true classic white with no crazy undertones. This is the color of out house, picket fence and aviary. Just a super clean and bright white. You will see that eggshell is my favorite finish.
Slate
Now make sure you don’t go ask for the color Slate by Behr for paint, this color is specific to the House & Fence line. The best Black that matches this color is Behr Ultimate Black (this is the color of the trim on our house.) We love this color on the fence! The biggest question we get asked is how do the plants do up against a black fence? Well it’s been 2 years and they are thriving still, worth it!
Herb Cornucopia
Herb Cornucopia by Behr Stain Blocking Paint and Primer Exterior in Semi Gloss
The perfect green if you are wanting an English Garden feel. I hunted and hunted to find the green that gave me the cozy cottage vibe but was still elegant. After many samples were brought home we found it. A green that’s not blue or overly bright. The perfect green that is so peaceful in the garden. We painted all of our garden beds and window boxes this color and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s held up.
Jungle Camouflage
Jungle Camouflage by Behr stain-blocking paint and primer in Satin finish
The front door. The entry to our house. I really wanted to have people come into the house and feel at peace here. Can you think of a more peaceful color than a soft green?
We have created some of our merchandise in the same color because we just love this color so much and so many people ask about this color! I completely get why they ask too. The perfect color for every front door!
Soft Pelican
Soft Pelican by Valspar Duramax 365 in Semigloss Finish
This is a new color to me and oh my, how I love her! The soft warm creamy beige with a very slight cool undertone. This color is what’s known as a chameleon color, it changes with the background and the lighting - Making it work so well in any environment. We just gave this bench a face lift and it’s the color she was screaming for! I opted for semi gloss since it’s a bench and that will help weather proof it just a little bit.
Paint Sprayer
The HomeRight paint sprayer! My Favorite Paint Tool.
Paint Sprayer:
This tool I want to go over for a hot second. If you plan to do a good amount of painting this will be your best friend. Usually it is listed at $120 but is often on sale for $79, so I would wait and buy it when it’s on sale!
We used this paint sprayer to do our entire house inside and out, the fence and so many small projects! The most current project was our garden bench in front of the aviary. We have had our sprayer for about 7 years at this point so the return on investment is unmatched!
Thats my list of paint tools and paint colors I have loved! hope this helps friend and can't wait to hear about what you are going to be painting
