8 Trees That Will Fit In Any Garden

Updated: Nov 6, 2023

There isn’t much that I love more than trees, but unfortunately I live on about a quarter of an acre. So I have worked on a list of trees for any garden! Even those small city lots or even a few trees you could grow in containers for years in you are a renter or container Gardener. I think the structure that trees bring to gardens is so important. So with that being said lets jump into some of my top small/space saving trees I could find from Monrovia. (tap on photo's to learn more about the tree on the Monrovia website. 1. Tina Sargent Crabapple

I need this tree. Like I really need this tree. I have wanted a crab apple tree for about 2 years now but I have a hard time finding the right size tree. I love the white blooms it gets in the spring and then the small bright red apples it gets late summer and all of winter. Perfect size tree only reaching 5ft tall and 6ft wide!! Growing zones 4-8. You can seriously fit this tree in any yard. Basically year round interest.

2. Little Ollie Dwarf Olive Tree

I love olive tres, I have loved them for years now. Funny story I use to work on a farm with an orchard of 100 year old olive trees and I loved them so much. So to be able to find a dwarf version that’s non fruiting is spectacular. I does reach 6ft by 6ft but can be pruned and trained into a topiary! I was so lucky to get my hands on this tree last spring and it had been so fun! It looks great in containers or in the landscape! Zones 8-11

3. Dwarf Brush Cherry

Another amazing Tree? Or Hedge plant? Well, both! This guy is awesome and I would love to add him to the garden. Zones 9-11 and only getting 6ft tall and wide at maturity, but could easily be trained into a tree, topiary or a hedge. So it’s perfect for in ground or in containers, multipurpose plant right here!

4. Baby Grand Magnolia

(Photo credit: Monrovia by Brandon friend-solis)

Because who doesn’t love Magnolias? What makes this one perfect is the fact its not going to grow to 40ft wide and 60ft tall! This one will actually fit on you small property because it only gets 8-10ft tall and wide with the magnolia flowers you want. Growing zones 7-9

5. Tiny Towers Italian Cypress

I personally love Italian Cypress and I think you either love them or you don’t. For me they feel very classy and like an old time movie. While even the normal Italian Cypress don’t get very wide they do grow to 50ft tall. That’s a bit much for a small property. So the Tiny towers will only get to 25ft-30ft tall and just 3ft wide!! That’s very impressive. Perfect for a small side yard where you need to add a tall privacy or want some cool vertical interest.

6. Brunes Weeping Serbian Spruce

This tree has very quickly moved to #1 on my list of trees I want in my garden. I grow in a zone 9 and this tree, zones 4-7….so, if and when I find it it’s going to have to be at a reasonable price point. I saw this tree at its mature size and im telling you right now I was in awe over this tree. It was something I will think about until I’m able to grow it in my garden, it only gets 8ft tall and 2ft wide in 10 years. The one I saw was about 20 years old and had to of been 15ft tall. I have dreams about this stunning tree.

7. Skyrocket Juniper

I love the look of blue evergreens, Brent however does not. I think it’s like Italian Cypress, you either love it or it’s not for you. This tree is definitely for me! 15-20ft tall and 2-3ft wide! That’s the perfect size for a tree. I’m thinking about taking out a few Arborvitae I have in a row a replacing them with a hedge of these trees, they are so pretty to me. Zones 4-9

8. Little Ragu Sweet Bay

Here’s another tree I’ve seen in person and if I can find it for sale, I will grab it. No questions asked. I love to use Bay leaves when cooking and to be able to grow my own would be the coolest thing ever. This Bay tree can be grown into a topiary to keep it even more compact or you can just let it do its thing as it only gets 6ft tall and wide. I would love to find the topiary version again. Last time I didn’t buy it and have thought about it often. Growing zones 8-11 but could be kept in a container and brought inside during winter months in colder zones.

That’s a quick list of 7 tress that have caught my eye recently, a few I have been lucky to find and a few I’ll be on the lookout for. I hope this helps you find that perfect tree to tuck into your property. I really believe that adding that wow factor of a tree is so important. Especially in small spaces. Make your garden somewhere that you love to be. A tree that gives you that wow factor is probably what’s missing.

Perfect timing Robbie... I just removed a few old, tired plants and have thought about putting in a small tree. Thanks for sharing your thoughts... I like every one of your suggestions.

Hello! Beautiful trees, thanks, Robbie. I have never heard of the Tina Sargent Crabapple tree, I can see why it is one of your favorite.

I love cooking with bay leaves, I am from Puerto Rico and bay leves is a staple in our cooking. Now, the Little Ragú is new to me as well. Too bad that I live in zone 7b Oklahoma, I guess that I could always place it in a pot, but I have a 11 month old English Bulldog that could eat anything he sees and I would be always in a panic if he eats one of these leaves 🍃

Great blog, love the trees 🌳
